Birthday number vs life path number

Written by Amber Bordewijk, updated

Two numbers come up in almost every numerology reading: the birthday number and the life path number. Both come from your date of birth, so they are easy to mix up. They describe different parts of you, though, and when they differ, that difference is often the most interesting part of a reading.

What the birthday number is

Your birthday number comes from one thing only: the day of the month you were born. I bring it back to a single digit, unless it lands on a master number. Born on the 5th, the 14th or the 23rd? Then your birthday number is 5, because 1 + 4 and 2 + 3 also make 5. Born on the 29th? Then 2 + 9 = 11, a master number, so it stays 11. The 19th gives 19, which becomes 1 + 9 = 10 and then 1. I write that as 19/1, because 19 is one of the karmic numbers.

In my blueprint this number sits in the position I call the Child. It describes who you were before the world started asking things of you: your first instincts, what came naturally when you were small, and often what people still notice about you first.

Some numerologists keep the full day, from 1 to 31, and give each day its own reading. I work with the reduced number, and I mention the original day where it adds something, as with the 14th or the 19th.

What the life path number is

The life path number uses the whole date: day, month and year. I reduce each part first and then add them together. It describes the central theme of your life, the lesson that keeps coming back in different forms. Where the birthday number shows your starting point, the life path shows the road you keep walking.

A worked example

Take someone born on 23 June 1994.

The birthday number only uses the 23: 2 + 3 = 5.

For the life path I take the day (5), the month (6) and the year, 1 + 9 + 9 + 4 = 23, which also reduces to 5. Then 5 + 6 + 5 = 16, and 1 + 6 = 7. Because the total passes 16, I write the life path as 16/7.

So this person has birthday number 5 and life path number 16/7. The 5 belongs to someone who likes variety, picks things up quickly and gets restless with too much routine. The 7 asks for depth, quiet and time to understand. In daily life that can feel like two voices, one that wants to go out and try everything and one that needs to be alone to make sense of it all. Neither voice is wrong. A combination like this tends to feel easiest when both get a place, for example by exploring widely and then taking time to reflect.

Which of the two matters more?

I see the life path as the main theme and the birthday number as the colour you bring to it. When both numbers are the same, the theme is usually very recognisable, to you and to the people around you. When they differ, you may feel that people see one side of you while you mostly live with another. That tells you something useful about how you work, and it can explain why certain situations feel easy and others ask more of you.

Your birthday number also tends to show up in how you were as a child. Looking back at that time, with some kindness for the younger you, can make the number easier to recognise.

How to find both numbers

Your birthday number you can work out in your head. For the life path number you can use the life path calculator, which shows every step. If you would like to see both together, along with the other ten numbers of your blueprint, enter your date of birth on the homepage. Your birthday number appears there as the Child position.
