What is numerology and how does the calculation work?

Numerology is a calculation method tracing back to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras. The system reduces the digits of your date of birth through systematic addition into a blueprint of 12 positions, including your life path number, personal year, challenge, and approach.
The core principle is straightforward: your date of birth is not arbitrary. By reducing the digits of your birth date using consistent rules, a structured blueprint emerges that outlines your behavioral tendencies, motivations, and growth lessons.
You do not need previous knowledge, only your birth date. The calculation is based on systematic mathematical reduction.
The core rule: reduction
Nearly all calculations in Pythagorean numerology use reduction. You add digits together until you reach a single number from 1 to 9. For example: 28 becomes 2+8 = 10, and 10 becomes 1+0 = 1.
There are three primary exceptions: master numbers 11, 22, and 33. When your calculation reaches one of these numbers, you do not reduce further. Master numbers carry heightened intensity and distinct responsibilities.
In addition, four numbers are identified as karmic numbers: 13, 14, 16, and 19. When one of these appears as an intermediate step during calculation, it adds an extra layer of meaning to that position.

The entire blueprint builds upon three starting numbers taken directly from your birth date:

A complete worked example
You do not need to do this yourself, the calculator works it all out for you. But if you like to see how the numbers come about, this is how. To make it concrete, here are all twelve positions for someone born on 5 March 1987. Each step uses the numbers from the rows above it. Where a total passes 13, 14, 16 or 19 along the way, I write both numbers, such as 16/7.

The personal year is the only number that changes. It always goes back to a single digit from 1 to 9.
Did you get a different answer when you worked it out yourself? Then it is usually about 11, 22 or 33. I do not reduce those any further, and they count as 11, 22 or 33 in the next step. With 13, 14, 16 and 19 I write both numbers, and the next step continues with the last one.

The personal year
Alongside the permanent positions is your personal year. This number changes each calendar year and highlights the active themes for your current 12-month period. Learn more about the meanings of each personal year.
Why your date of birth and not your name
Many English-language numerology sites also calculate numbers from your full name, such as the expression or soul urge number. I work only with your date of birth. It never changes, it is the same in every language and every alphabet, and you cannot get it wrong by using a nickname or a married name. That keeps the blueprint simple and the same for everyone who calculates it.
What numerology is and what it is not
I see numerology as a mirror. The numbers give words to patterns you may already recognise in yourself: what comes easily, where you tend to get stuck, what you keep running into. That can help you look at yourself and the people around you with a little more understanding.
Numerology is not a science, and it does not predict the future. A number never tells you what will happen or what you have to do. If something in your blueprint does not fit, trust what you know about yourself.
Questions I often get
Why does another website give me a different number?
There are several ways to calculate. Some sites add up every digit of the date at once, others reduce the day, month and year first, as I do. For most dates the life path ends up the same, but master numbers and karmic numbers show up differently along the way. Sites based on your name use a different system altogether. And the method with twelve positions that I use is the form common in Dutch numerology, so many English sites simply have fewer positions.
Will my numbers ever change?
Eleven of the twelve stay the same your whole life, because your date of birth does not change. Only your personal year moves forward each calendar year.
Where do I start?
With your life path number, the central number. After that, your birthday number is a good second step, because it often explains the first impression you make.
